Monday morning September 26th we went to the NYC Marriage Bureau to pick up our marriage license. I saw my new name on paper for the first time. We watched other couples also picking up their marriage licenses. And it was sweet to watch couples actually getting married that day. Most brides wore understated knee-high white dresses, others went all out. We then walked to a nearby park to meet our officiant Beth for the first time. We talked more about economy, politics, and culture than we did the wedding ceremony, which suited us just fine – we were happy to have a human rights activist who shared similar values with us officiating our wedding. What wasn’t so good was learning she’d been recently evicted from her apartment. Damn you high New York rental prices.
